A small group of 5 Research Crew gathered at St Stephen’s for a great meal. St Stephen earned 4 fish 🐟🐟🐟🐟 on the 5 fish scale. The fried cod was fantastic! Hand breaded in a unique cornmeal breading, thick chunks of cod were perfectly cooked. Light and flaky, but unfortunately not very hot rated 4.5. They also offered baked cod, but no one in our group tried it. They did have teriyaki salmon which was a tasty 4. The fried shrimp was crispy, and fish tacos both rated 4. But…the sides were not as tasty as the fish. They offered both creamy and vinegar slaw, both rated a 3, both tasted “processed”. Canned green beans almondine were nicely seasoned but mushy,4. They also had hot, crispy fries (5), hush puppies (4), spaghetti (5), and rice pilaf (3). No one in our group tried the mac & cheese bites. They had a variety of homemade desserts, free for seniors (which we all are), or $1. They served food on sturdy recyclable paper plates (a nice change from styrofoam) and had real silverware. Real lemon slices are always appreciated, but sadly packaged tartar and cocktail sauce. The line was quite long, at 45 minutes, but a cocktail “waitress” came around taking orders and bringing drinks while we waited. Humorous artwork lined the walls helping to pass the time as well. Many volunteers walking around helping and were very friendly. It was very loud in the hall, but the appearance of “Sharkey” was a fun ending to a delightful meal. Overall, St Stephen’s unique cornmeal cod was delicious. As we know, “sides matter”! SSP lost a few points on their sides being mostly processed/packaged food. And most of the food was not hot. But, they earned extra points back with real lemon, recyclable plates, real silverware, friendly people, and Sharkey! Overall, a very good fish fry. Join us next week when we go to Our Lady of the Pillar.
